Research

Master thesis (2004): Analysis of the Maritime Safety Regime - Risk Improvement Possibilities for the Target Factor (Paris MoU). This thesis was presented to the advisory board of the Paris MoU (Paris Memorandum of Understanding) including representatives from the EU Commission and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency).

PhD thesis (2006): The Econometrics of Maritime Safety - Recommendations to Enhance Safety at Sea. The thesis can be found in the electronic depositary of the library under the following address: http://hdl.handle.net/1765/7913. An abstract of the thesis was submitted to the flag state sub-committee meeting (FSI 15) at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by two member states (New Zealand and Australia).

Work Experience

1990 to 2002: I have worked at sea for about 10 years on various ships across the world. The most interesting vessel I have worked on is S.Y. Sea Cloud, a four-masted barque built in 1931 and still in operation today (www.seacloud.com). My last position in this industry was fleet auditor with Carlson Companies and in charge of six vessels and two offices. I also had the privilege to be part of the "new building" team for two new ships (Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Voyager) in the ship yards (St. Nazaire and Genova).
